Her husband, Wm. Kitson, died ten years ago next April. Her death disorganized the old and highly esteemed home, where the family was accustomed to meet annually in reunion, with great pleasure to both parents and children. Mrs. Kitson was born in Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont, on the 31st day of October, A. D. 1822. She was the daughter of Ichabod Rood, and granddaughter of Joshua Rood, a family which was prominent in Revolutionary times and on whose farm was fought the noted battle of Bennington. She was married to Wm. Kitson, August 15, 1841. To this union were born seven children, all of whom are still living: John D., Benjamin M., and Fred Kitson, of Easton, Ionia Co.; W. Henry Kitson and Mrs. Mort H. Weller of Rockford, Kent Co,; Mrs. Charles Palmer of this city, and Mrs. J. A. May of Lansing, all of whom were at her bedside when she passed serenely away. In the fall of 1841 following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Kitson came to Michigan and settled in Easton Township, upon section nine, where they only remained three years; then moved upon what Mr. Kitson named the Merino farm. Here they lived thirty seven years. In this home all the children were born. In January, 1882, they moved to 330 Yeomans St., Ionia, the present home, where they spent their remaining days. Mrs. Kitson was one of the thirteen original members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, first organized in the Dildine neighborhood in 1843. She has retained her membership in this church since its organization and is the last one of the charter members to depart this life. The funeral services were held Sunday morning at 10 o’clock at her late residence, amid profuse floral offerings from her children and neighbors, whom she loved so much. Music was furnished by Mrs. Cushing, Mrs. Jennings and Mrs. H. A. Rice. Rev. D. H. Shelly officiated. She was laid by the side of her husband in Highland Park Cemetery, her four sons acting as pallbearers.
