Klenk, 85, Pioneer Shoemaker, Dies at Son's Home John Martin Klenk, who was born in Germany 85 years ago, died at the home of his son, John C. Klenk, 997 Hackett street, Tuesday evening after an illness of a year, the past nine weeks of which were spent in bed. His death was due to old age. He learned the shoemakers trade in Germany, and when he came to America in 1868 he settled in Ionia, and set up a shop. About 30 years ago, when machine-made shoes became competitive, he engaged in the repair of shoes and boots until the infirmities of age caused him to retire. One year following his coming to Ionia he was married, but Mrs. Klenk lived only a few years. He was a charter member of the Arbeiter society of Ionia. Five children are living, John C. and Jacob, of Ionia; Mrs. Mammie McKinley, Summer, Mont.; Charles, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. James Feeney, Toledo, O. The funeral services will be held from the home of his son, John C. Klenk, Friday at 2:30. Rev. B.H. Succop will officiate. Interment will take place in the family lot in Highland Park cemetery.
