Louis Irving Knapp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Knapp, living three miles west and one mile north of Lake Odessa, was drowned in a small lake near Belding Sunday afternoon. The remains were brought here Monday and the funeral was held from the West Odessa U. B. church Tuesday forenoon, and the interment made in Lakeside cemetery. Young Knapp with a party of boys from Belding rode out to the lake on bicycles to take a bath. The young man did not inform his companions that he could not swim, but as soon as he took off his clothes, plunged in to the deep water. When he came up he appeared at ease, and those with him supposed he was tredding, but he at once sank again never to come back alive. A search was at once begun for his body which lasted for nearly four hours, the banks of the little lake by this time being nearly black with people. The boy went to Belding last November where he secured employment in the refrigerator factory and has worked there ever since. He staying with a brother and sister who live in that city. He was at home about a month ago for a short visit and rest. He was born December 17, 1881, and has always lived in this part of the county, consequently he has a wide circle of friends who hold him in high esteem and speak of him as an exemplary and splendid young man. Fate seems to pursue the Knapp family, as this is the second son to meet an untimely death. Fred, an older brother, being killed by a falling limb, while working in the woods with his father, eleven years ago. The father and son were felling trees, and the tree they had cut off fell and lodged in the top of another tree, in getting it out of this position the accident occurred, a limb breaking loose and flying back to where the father and son had run for safety, first struck the ground top first, then whipping over, the butt of the limb struck the boy on the head killing him before the father’s eyes. Two years ago a bright young daughter was taken suddenly ill and passed away in a few days. The father and mother and ten children are left to grieve over the loss of the near one.
