Knapp, aged 75 years passed away at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William Sheperd, in Grand Rapids, last Saturday night at about 6 o’clock, with pneumonia being given as the cause of death and a complication of diseases contributing. Mr. Knapp had been in poor health for some time but had been seriously ill for only about three weeks prior to his passing away. Mr. Knapp had the distinction of being the city’s oldest resident in point of years of residence, having been born in this city on October 8, 1867 at a time when there were but few houses and residents in this community. He was one of the sons of the late Charles and Sarah Knapp, early day residents of this city. Practically the entire lifetime of Mr. Knapp was spent in this city, where he was employed at carpenter work and assisting in the building of many of the older homes in the town, as a cabinet maker in refrigerator factories and later on with the predecessor firms of what is now the Belding Lumber Company. For the past three winters he had been spending the more severe cold months at the homes of his children in Grand Rapids. The body of Mr. Knapp was brought to this city by Undertaker Arthur J. Fitzjohn and prepared for burial and funeral services were held at the Fitzjohn funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. Thomas Rice, pastor of the Methodist church officiating and burial was in River Ridge cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles North, Raleigh LaVere, Bert Gregg, Maurice and Sam Clements and Dale Dicken. Surviving Mr. Knapp in addition to Mrs. Sheperd, at whose home he passed away, are three other daughters, the Misses Edna and Lois Knapp also of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Claude Moore of this city; a son, Elmer, of Ludington, and a brother, Charles Knapp of this city.
