(Laurie) Knoerl went to be with her Lord on July 1, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter. She was born February 14, 1934 to Fred A. and Aurelia T. Chapman in Detroit, Michigan. She attended School at SS Peter and Paul in Ionia, MI. St. Mary’s in Miami, Fl. graduating from St. Theresa in Detroit, MI in 1951. She received her college degrees from the University of Detroit; Bachelor of Science in Education (1956) and Master of Arts in Education/Math Education (1969). She taught in several public and parochial schools in the Detroit area, and SS. Peter and Paul School in Ionia, MI. retiring after teaching 23 years. She married Bernard A. Knoerl in Dearborn Heights, MI on June 21, 1958. Together they raised four children while residing in Redford Township. Surviving are her husband Bernard, sons Paul (Becky) Knoerl of Rockford, and Gary (Ann Marie) Knoel of Livonia; daughters Anne (Jerry) Zawacki of Orleans, and Jane (Phillip) Nuney of Southgate. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Brian and Aaron Knoerl, Richelle Nuney, Megan Zawacki and Sarah Knoerl. Surviving also are brother, Fred Chapman and his wife Nila, and their family. In addition Laurie is survived by many member of the Knoerl family listed in a book she published about her husband’s family. After retirement Laurie and her husband moved to Orleans, MI. She served on the Long Lake Board for 20 plus years, helping monitor weed control and water level. She also was an officer on the Long Lake Association Board for many years, involving her in many lake activities. She was an active member of Michigan Lakes & Streams Association, representing Riparian interest in Michigan. In the year 2000 she published a book about Long Lake entitled “Remembering Long Lake”. Her motto was “BLOOM WHERE YOU’RE PLANTED” (Love and serve God wherever your circumstances). A Memorial mass of celebration will be held Thursday, July 7, 11:00 A.M. at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church located at 434 High Street, Ionia, MI. Funeral arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Visitation will be held Wednesday 2:00-4:00 p.m. & 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home in Ionia. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Family and friends may gather after the memorial service on Thursday in SSPP Apostles Hall. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Ionia.
