Knowles died at his home in this city, on Sunday evening. He was born in Rockbrook, Ireland, June 7, 1831, and came to Michigan, locating in Ionia, in May, 1855. He was married to Miss Louise York, a sister of Mrs. Dr. W. B. Cutler, June 15, 1857. Six children were born to this union, three of whom are still living: George, Harry, and Miss Anis J. Mr. Knowles has made his home in Ionia ever since his first coming over forty years ago, and was widely known and highly esteemed as a man of sterling integrity, an honorable and useful citizen. He was a home-lover, who found his pleasure with his family, to whom he always showed the deepest affection. His charity extended to all mankind, and he was always ready to find excuse for others’ shortcomings. He was, however, firm in his convictions of right and had no hesitancy in asserting his opinions. He was a life long, unwavering Democrat in politics, and was active in election contests, without working politics for personal ends. He served one or two terms as city collector, the nomination and election coming to him as a deserved testimonial of confidence and regard from his fellow citizens. Deceased had been in poor health for several years, but he had been severely ill only a few weeks. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum, in which he carried a policy of $3,000. Mr. Knowles joined the M. E. church about ten years ago, and has since been a consistent, worthy member. The funeral services took place this afternoon, at the family residence on Morse street, conducted by Rev. W. H. B. Urch, and were largely attended by sympathizing friends. The bearers were H. A. Rich, A. S. Wright, George Knowles and Frank Caswell. Interment in Highland Park.
