The Rev. Fistler of the Baptist church of Portland officiated. His text was “Ye know not what day; Ye know not what hour.” His sermon was fitting the occasion, and the points which he brought out were touching. The church was packed to its utmost capacity, many having to remain outside. The floral tributes were elaborate, the coffin and rostrum being buried with them. Deceased was born in Crawford Co. Michigan, April 10, 1883. He was a graduate of Portland High school in 1901. In 1904 he accepted employment as fireman on the Pere Marquette R.R., and remained as such until the sad accident at Salem Saturday July 20. Harley was honest and conscientious in all his undertakings and had the respect of all by whom he was known. His cheerful face, frank disposition and loving nature made him a friend to all. He leaves a father, mother and sister, and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Deceased was a member of Ionia lodge No. 431 Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and carried $580 insurance, his mother being the beneficiary. The above named lodge performed the late sad rites. The interment was in Portland cemetery. The pallbearers were V. B. Wheaton and J. D. West representing the fireman; and Frank Jenkens and Richard Crittenden of Portland, Lyman Crane and Don Barker of Collins, classmates. The floral tributes embraced set pieces from Lee Alvord, engineer of wrecked train; from M. W.A. of Collins; B. of L. F., Ionia; and many others. There was a large attendance of mourning friends from Ionia, besides those from the vicinity of the parental home.
