He was born December 1, 1926 in Grand Haven the son of Charles and Dorothy (Fouke) Kohloff. Many knew him as “coach”, as a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. However, his greatest roles were as a devoted husband to his wife, Lucile of 57 years, and as a dedicated father to his children. Chuck enjoyed sports of all kinds. He especially liked to follow Ionia athletic events. In his retirement, he enjoyed sailing, golfing, traveling with friends, and visiting family. He was an involved and loving grandfather. In his later years, there was no greater joy of his than spending time with his grandchildren and keeping up with their lives and accomplishments. Chuck graduated from Ionia High School in 1944. He attended Central Michigan University and graduated in 1949 with a degree in education. He played varsity football for the Chippewa’s. He was a three year letter winner and co-captain. He started his teaching and coaching career at Yale High School and later returned to his hometown of Ionia. He taught and coached football for 13 years and was the athletic director for 28 years for Ionia Public Schools. He was a member of the coaches Hall of Fame and Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was involved in a number of state and local organizations as a volunteer and board member. He married Lucile M. Gallagher, May 2, 1947. He taught at Ionia Public Schools. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lucile Kohloff of Ionia; daughters, Teresa (Harvey) Klifman of Alma, Sheila Hughes of Virginia Beach, VA, Janet (Tim) Cordes of Indianapolis, IN; son, Daniel (Sandra) Kohloff of Sturgis; seven granddaughters; one grandson and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Marty Culver officiating.
