A former resident of Belding, Mr. Koponen was born November 6, 1917 in North Dakota and was the eldest of five sons of Tanani and Hilda Koponen, both deceased. His four brothers preceded him in death. On October 19, 1940, he was married to the former Jeanne LaVere of Belding and was a cadet navigator with the 15th airforce out of Italy in WWII. His plane was shot down and he was injured and held prisoner for 15 days in Rumania after which he was awarded the purple heart and made captain. Mr. Koponen was a tool engineer and belonged to Holy Cross Lutheran church, Detroit where he had held several offices. He and his family resided at 13378 Mark Twain, Detroit. Besides his wife, Jeanne, he leaves three daughters, Kathryn, Pfc. Pamela and Melissa; two sons, Paul and Timothy.
