Ionia Sentinel, 31 Jan 1983

Albert A. Kowatch, 69, died of a heart attack at his home Sunday noon.  Born 
May 24, 1913, in Molino, Fla., he was the son of Stephen and Barbara Befot 
Kowatch.  He moved with his family to Ionia, attended Ionia schools, and 
graduated from Ionia High School in 1931.

He was married to Aurice Hunter in Saranac, Dec. 9, 1939, and they made their 
home in Saranac and Ionia for 25 years, before moving to Morrison Lake.  They 
sold their Morrison Lake home and moved to Florida in 1977.  His wife died 
April 26, 1979, and he returned to the Ionia area in 1980.

Prior to retirement he had worked at GM Diesel, in Grand Rapids; Kelvinator in 
Grand Rapids, and the Ionia State Hospital.  He retired from the state hospital 
in 1975.

An ardent golfer, he was a former member of the Ionia Country Club and a 
present member of the Morrison Lake Country Club.

Surviving are: one son, Gene, of Ionia; a daughter, Mrs. Mike (Kae) Smit, of 
Lowell; five grandchildren; one brother, Joseph, of Ludington; two sisters, 
Mrs. Anna Rider of Stanton and Mrs. Rose Conner of Ionia, and a close friend, 
Crystal Olmstead of Saranac.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Leddick Funeral Home, the 
Rev. Ron Dow of Ionia First Christian Church officiating.  Burial will be in 
Saranac Cemetery.  The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 
p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  A memorial for the Michigan 
Heart Association has been established, in the care of the funeral home.
