He was born in Hungary, the son of Stephen and Barbara Befot Kowatch and came to the United States with his parents at the age of one year. They settled in Youngstown, Ohio for a few years before moving to Ionia. He attended SS Peter and Paul academy. Upon finishing school he worked for Pere Marquette railroad until entering the US army in WW II. He served in the communications division with General Patton’s army and was a participant in the Battle of the Bulge and other battles across central Europe. He was a recipient of the Bronze star awarded for action in one of these battles. After service he returned to work at the PM railroad in Detroit and worked there until retirement at the age of 47. After retirement he started a trailer rental in Detroit and owned and operated this business until retiring and selling in 1967. He was a member of Detroit VFW post. He is survived by his father, Stephen Kowatch of Ionia; three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be at Boynton funeral home Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Lester C. Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Highland Park cemetery. Family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
