She was born on January 12, 1936, the daughter of Harold and Frances (Barrett) Nickels. She graduated from Mercy School of Nursing of Detroit, St. Lawrence Hospital Unit in 1966. She married Martin J. Kozachik, MD and worked for many years with him at his Family Medical Practice in Portland. Mary Ann was very busy raising her 7 children and very active with their school activities. She supported her children in all sports and music and wanted only the best for them; setting high standards and morals. She enjoyed being a nurse, was very dedicated; highly respected and influential. Her compassion and understanding will always be remembered. She especially enjoyed finding time for cross-country skiing, playing tennis, softball and golf, and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of East Lansing. She was preceded in death by her father and husband. Surviving are her mother, Frances Nickels of Lansing; children, Jean Kozachik (Robert Dotterrer) of Traverse City, Ken (Barbara) of Kentwood, Tom (Sharon) of Portland, Carol (Michael) Delaney of of Belmont, David (Kym) of Hudsonville, Phillip (Gerri Lynn) of Perry and Eileen Kozachik of Lansing; 8 grandchildren; sister, Lorraine Williams; brothers, John (Phyllis) Nickels and Fr. Peter Nickels; and several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, May 28, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 140 Church St., Portland, with Fr. Peter Nickels officiating. Interment will follow in Danby Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Neller Chapel, 210 Bridge St., Portland, beginning Wednesday 2 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and the Scripture Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mary Ann Kozachik.
