He was born Aug. 31, 1903 in Saginaw, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Kress, and married Opal H. Silvernail Jan. 17, 1929 in the Ionia First United Methodist Church Parsonage. He resided in Ionia all of his married life. He was a Juvenile officer in Probate Court for 15 years, retiring in 1969. Prior to that, he worked in the Ionia County Social Services for 15 years. Mr. Kress was a member of the Ionia First United Methodist Church; Ionia Masonic Lodge, of which he was a past Grand Master; Order of Eastern Star; and the Royal Archmasons. He is survived by his wife, Opal; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Jeanne) Bond of Grand Rapids and Miss Joanne M. Kress of London, England; two brothers, Clarence Kress of Litchfield, Mich. and Lawrence Kress of LaCrosse, Wisc.; four sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Amelia) Gordon of Ionia, Mrs. Ralph (Thelma) Osborn of Sparta, Wis., Mrs. Elmer (Isabel) Geik of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Thomas (Alice) Sullivan of Belmont; and three grandchildren, Andrea, Laura and Carleton George. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the First united Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carl Hausermann officiating. Special organ music will be played by Richard M. DeVinney of Grand Rapids. Masonic services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Myers-Roetman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Organ Fund.
