She was born May 21, 1913, three miles south of Belding on the family homestead. There, Lucile, Ina and Marion were nurtured by their parents, CB and Peal Cowles Johnston. Upon graduation from Belding High School, Lucile continued to help her father farm and make maple syrup. She married Hearzel Krouse on Sept. 29, 1937, in Belding, and moved to her present home on Alderman Street. There they raised two children, Carlene and Merrill. Lucile was always busy keeping her house, as well as a large garden. She especially enjoyed various PTA roles, being a Cub Scout den mother, and being active in band parents. Lucile was a member of Belding Bible Church and she taught and led in education and mission programs. In later years, she because a caregiver to several children from different Belding families. She also worked in a chiropractor’s office, as a custodian and laundress at Belding Nursing Home and as custodian for Smyrna Bible Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hearzel Krouse; a granddaughter, Lindsay; a sister, Ina Fries; and a niece, Marilyn Brown. She is survived by her two children, Carlene and Philip Howe of Elk Grove, Ill., Merrill and Pamela Krouse of Belding, eight grandchildren, Cheryl and Kip, April and Eric, Jodie and John, Kirk, Kimberly and Wayne, Lori and Don, Shane and Kevin; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Porter Walker of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Mildred Adair of Ionia; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she cherished. She will be dearly missed but not forgotten. Funeral services are 1 p.m. today at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Ken Martin officiating. Interment is in Rest Haven Memory Gardens. A luncheon will follow the service at Belding Bible Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Belding Bible Church Building Fund or Youth Fund.
