Nov. 27, 2012 Ionia- Gerald Lewis Krywanski, 86, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Nov. 25, 2012, with his family by his bedside. Gerald will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Hazel. Together they shared 66 years of marriage. He also is survived by his three children, Michael (Polly) Krywanski, Susan (Robert) Calkins, Bonnie (Dale) Petersen; six grandchildren, Amy Calkins, Leslie Calkins, Kelsey (Ryan) Petersen-Dreyer, Courtney Petersen, Laurie (Kevin) Petersen-Howe, Brady Petersen; three great-grandchildren, and one due in May; a sister, Helen (Gilbert) Droste; a niece and nephew. Proceeding Gerald in death were his parents, Frank and Esther Krywanski. Gerald attended Saints Peter and Paul Academy and Ionia High School. Gerald proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II after enlisting at age 18. He served on the USS Menifee, APA 202, 1st Division, participating in the invasion of Okinawa and the liberation of the Philippine Islands and the occupation of Nagasaki, Japan. After leaving the military he and Hazel married and they returned to Ionia to make their home and begin their family. Gerald worked for the City of Ionia police department as an officer, eventually achieving the rank of chief of police. He later worked as a deputy for the Ionia County Sheriff's Department. Following 20 year of service, Gerald retired from the State of Michigan as a corrections officer. After retiring, Gerald and Hazel enjoyed many warm winters in Florida and summers by Lake Michigan on their boat. Gerald was a member of the VFW Post 5065, Sheridan and the American Legion Post 0380, Carson City. Jerry will be remembered by many as a Jack-of-all-trades, as he could build or fix just about anything. He was most proud of the hand-crafted grandmother clocks which he lovingly made for each member of his immediate family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father Tom Boufford as celebrant. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home of Ionia. Scripture service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Gerald's name to SS Peter & Paul Catholic School Fund or Ionia County Commission on Aging. Online condolence may be made at www.lakefuneralhome.com.
