Hazel was born in Mina, South Dakota to Fred and Minnie Bugner and along with her brother Fred and sister Amelia experienced a childhood on a small farm on the South Dakota prairie that few of us can imagine. As a little girl she drove a team of horses to haul water back to her family's primitive farmhouse which had no well, electricity or plumbing. After her mother's death, her father moved the family from the farm to Long Beach,California where she finished school and soon after met her future husband and love of her life, Gerald, a young sailor fresh from a tour of the South Pacific during WW II. After the war, Hazel and Jerry moved back to Ionia where they built their home themselves and started a family.Hazel was a working mother, first with the Ionia City Clerks office and later with the Michigan Department of Corrections. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Ionia and in recent years attended Zion Methodist Church. She attended many of the activities at the Ionia County Commission on Aging and volunteered at the Senior Center. She and Jerry greatly enjoyed their summers on their boat, the Haz-E-Lady, and made many friends at the marina and on their many cruises. They were also avid campers and enjoyed wintering in Florida. In addition to her husband,Hazel was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Calkins in July 2020 and son-in-law Dale Petersen in December 2017. She is survived by her son Michael (Polly)Krywanski, daughter Bonnie Petersen and son- in-law Robert Calkins. Grandchildren Amy Calkins, Lesley Calkins, Kelsey (Ryan) Dreyer and Courtney Petersen; great-grandchildren Henry, Charley and Oliver Dreyer. Hazel spent the last 22 months of her life at Hathaway Hills Assisted Living facility in Greenville where she was given the most loving and compassionate care that she and her family could hope for. There is no question that her life was greatly enriched by the many wonderful staff members at Hathaway who went above and beyond to make her difficult final months more comfortable. Visitation will be at Lake Funeral Home at 11:00 AM on Monday October 10th followed immediately by the funeral service at 1:00 PM. there will e a private interment at Balcom Cemetery for family members after the funeral service.
