The telegram says that the remains can be sent home or can be buried in the national cemetery at Brooklyn navy yard. Mrs. Kuempel replied by wire to send the remains on to Ionia. Private Kuempel was 22 years of age and was born in Canada, moving here two years ago with his parents. He enlisted in the navy about a year ago, in New Orleans, and had been aboard a United States ship, located much of the time near the Cuban islands, until two months ago when he arrived in New York. While in Ionia he was employed at both the Hayes-Ionia and Ypsilanti-Reed factories. Arrangement for funeral later. ------------ The remains of Private Edward E. Kuempel, who died at the marine hospital, Oct. 15, of pneumonia, arrived in the city last evening, and were taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Kuempel, 6 Stevenson place. The funeral was held from the residence at 2:30 this afternoon, Rev. B. H. Succop officiating. Interment at Highland Park cemetery. There were many beautiful flowers. Private Kuempel enlisted in the navy in July, 1917, at Detroit, and was sent to Paris Island, N.C. He was with the marines in many places, but never got to France. He was born in Kitchner, Canada, in 1897, and was in his 22d year. A brother, Jacob Kuempel, is with the American army in France.
