He was born May 11, 1944 in Ionia to Leon and Lorena (Smith) Kuhtz. Fred graduated from Ionia high School with the class of 1963. He then entered the Navy, served during the Vietnam War and later joined the Michigan National Guard. Fred married Carol Burns on January 11, 1975 in Ionia. After returning from the service, he worked as a lift truck driver at the General Motors service parts warehouse in Lansing for 31 years. Fred was a life member of the VFW, where he served as chaplain in the Honor Guard. He was also a life member of the American Legion. Fred coached in the Ionia Youth Baseball League, was a Boy Scout Leader and a volunteer fireman for the Berlin Orange Fire Department. He along with his wife Carol, were foster parents for 13 years to over 60 children. Fred received the Quilt of Valor Award in 2021. He was an avid studier of religion and history, and he enjoyed camping with his family. Surviving Fred is his wife of 46 years Carol Kuhtz of Ionia. Sons; Trenton (Jennifer Spoor) Kuhtz f Melbourne, Australia, Matthew Kuhtz of Ionia. Grandchildren; Clara Kuhtz and Lochlann Kuhtz. Sisters: Mary Lee (Denis) McLaughlin of Minnesota, Kathy (Jim) Campbell of New York and Carol (Tom) O'Connor of Ionia. Brothers and Sisters-in-law; Mary Kline, Wendy (Marty) Dowsett, Brad Burns, Laird Burns, Kevin Burns and Kelli Burns. Best friends; Dan Patrick and Jim Huver. His beloved cat; Bobbie Charles. Funeral services for Fred will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, August 2, 2021 at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia; followed by committal and military honors at Letts Cemetery in Ionia. Visitation will be Sunday, August 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to theLowe Syndrome Association.
