Kuhtz (nee Smith) of Ionia died on April 16, 2015, after a wonderful 93 years of a life well lived. She was born on July 2, 1921, to Mary (nee Gross) and Martin Smith in Westphalia, Michigan, where she went to St. Mary’s Catholic School. She learned to speak German as a young child, and, even in her last years, she loved to sing the German songs she had learned from her mother. On Oct. 2, 1942, Lorena married Leon Kuhtz at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. She worked at Chrysler Corporations’ Lyons Trim Plant until it closed in 1979. As a young woman, Lorena took great pride in how she looked. She had an elegant sense of style and looked so lovely that she often stood out like her favorite bird, the red cardinal. She was a gracious hostess – she loved to cook and bake for her family – and took pleasure in setting a beautiful table. She delighted in arranging bouquets of the flowers she grew in her flower gardens. Lorena also enjoyed reading and playing Euchre. She seemed happiest when singing or whenever she was asked to yodel. She adored her children and loved them unconditionally, and was devoted to her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She is survived by her four children, Frederick (Carol) Kuhtz, Mary Lee (Denis) McLaughlin, Kathy (James) Campbell, and Carol (Thomas) O’Connor; grandsons Trenton (Jennifer) Spoor) Kuhtz, Matthew Kuhtz, and Kevin and Timothy O’Connor, and great-granddaughter, Ciara Kuhtz. Lorena is also survived by eleven nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years; brothers, Edwin (Regina), Carl (Marie), Louis Smith; nieces, Genet (Robert) Shattuck, Joanne Kuhtz; nephews Richard, Donald and James (Linda) Smith. We will gather to celebrate Lorena’s life. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia, and Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday at 11 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 434 High St., Ionia, with Rev. Thomas Boufford presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Balcom Cemetery, Tuttle Road, Ionia. In lieu of flowers, the Kuhtz family requests that contributions be made to Ionia Hospice Services or SSPP School in memory of Lorena.
