DOD: Sunday, 11 April 1954 Ionia County’s 1954 highway death toll zoomed to five Sunday when four fatalities, one near Portland, were recorded. Clayton Kunzi, 31, of Lyons, died at St. Lawrence hospital, Lansing, at 8:05 a.m. Sunday from injuries received in an auto accident seven hours earlier, three miles north of Portland on Divine Highway, near Portland Country Club. Sunday afternoon at Saranac Mrs. Clayton Smith, 35, of Grand Rapids, Karl Smith, 7, and Shirley Smith, 4, both of Saranac, were killed when the car in which they were riding was struck by a train at a crossing. Chief of Police Jay Clark said that Mr. Kunzi was pinned under the car in which he had been a passenger. The car was driven by Henry Rogers 61, of Lyons, and Max Webberburn, 29, of Ionia, was also a passenger, Chief Clark reported. The local officer said that the Rogers car was headed north, its occupants returning from work at a Lansing factory, when it and another auto, going south apparently collided at about 1:00 a.m. The other car was driven by Cleveland Howard, 27, of Charlotte, and he was accompanied by Fred Reed, 36, of Portland. Chief Clark said. Neither was injured. The Rogers car rolled over and was badly wrecked, but the other auto was not so seriously damaged. The Neller ambulance from Portland, took Mr. Kunzi and Mr. Rogers to the hospital at Lansing. Mr. Rogers suffered leg injuries. Funeral services for Mr. Kunzi were held at Muir on Wednesday afternoon, with burial at Muir. Surviving are the widow, Irma; a son, John, 6; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kunzi of Muir; and a sister, Mrs. Gerald Miller of Fowler.
