Dec. 4, 2009 Richard Donald Kurzhals, age 69, passed away on Dec. 2, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Nov/ 27, 1940 in South Bend, Ind., the son of Walter and Helen (Searer) Kurzhals. Richard married Jean Long Aug. 3, 1963 in South Bend, Ind. He attended Indiana University receiving B.S. and MS degrees and Michigan State University receiving a PhD. He was a professor at Grand Rapids Community College teaching Geography and Political Science for 37 years until his retirement in 2002. While at GRCC he enjoyed working in various capacities to improve the quality of education for students and staff. In 2005 Richard was named Emeritus Faculty for the College, and was honored to give the Commencement Address, as well as having an annual scholarship funded in his name. Richard often said,” I had the best job in the world.” He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed reading, and was a loving family man. Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years Jean Kurzhals of Saranac; his children and grandchildren, Tim (Lisa) Kurzhals and children Breanna, Kaila and Daylore of Lowell, David (Josette) Kurzhals and children Levi, Devon and Olivia Paige of Alto; brother Benny (Jane) Kurzhals of VanDalia; sister-in-law Jane (Paul) Stone; many nieces and nephews and numerous friends and co-workers. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and by 1 sister Joan. A Funeral service will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at Saranac Community Church with Rev. John Madvig officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives Friday 4-7 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac.
