EMANUEL KUSSMAUL STEPPED IN FRONT OF CAR ON MAIN STREET. LEAVES HUSBAND AND SON LARGE FUNERAL ------------------- Lake Odessa was shocked Saturday evening when the word passed around that a woman had been struck by an automobile on Main street, and for some time no one seemed to be able to find out who it was. It later proved to be Mrs. Emanuel Kussmaul of Woodland township, formerly of this village. It seems Mrs. Kussmaul had just been to the fruit store and purchased a pineapple. She then went to cross the street, passing between two automobiles, and a third one we understand was parked behind others which partially shut off the view from the north. It is sad Mrs. Kussmaul watched from he south, before attempting to cross to see no machine was coming from the direction when she was hit by the car driven by Gailen Bever coming from the notch. The wheel did not pass over her body as was reported but when hit she was thrown under the axel in such a manner as to give her internal injuries and a skull injury from the fall. The young man stopped his car almost immediately and several business men helped to extricate her from the machine. She was unconscious and her head badly bruised. She was carried into Claud Carpenter's Implement store and a few minutes later undertaker Weed and assistants carried her to Dr. Peabody's office. Not regaining consciousness she was taken to the house of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Baker where she was cared for, and a council of doctors with the above physician consisting of Dr. A. I. Laughlin of Clarksville and Dr. C. S. McIntyre of Hastings was held. No hope was held out for her recovery. She died Monday evening at 7:30 without regaining consciousness. There seems to be no blame laid on anyone since it was purely an accident. Mr. and Mrs. Kussmaul were residents of the village three or four years, living in their home at the corner of 2nd street and 4th Ave. Everyone expresses sympathy for the bereaved family and a great many for the young man, driving the car, as he is considered blameless by most people expressing themselves. He is a graduate of this year's class of our high school. OBITUARY The deceased sister, whose mortal remains we accompany to their last resting place, Mrs. Katherine Kussmaul, nee Zeitter, was born on the 19th day of May, 1874, in Obershandorf, Wuertemberg, Germany. In infancy she was brought to the Lord Jesus in holy baptism, and later, when she had finished the prescribed course of Christian training and education, embraced the Lutheran faith and was confirmed in the local church. In 1850, when old 16 years of age the deceased came to America and remained for a number of years in Lansing, Mich. not merely earning livelihood for her herself, but also contributing to the purport of a widowed mother. On the 24th day of Dec. A. D. 1902, she was united in holy wedlock to Mr. Emauel Kussmaul and the young couple immediately took up their residence on the old Kussmaul homestead near Woodbury, where the happy family lived for many years and where also their only son and child, Stuard Kussmaul, was born. In the spring of 1919 they sold their farm and moved to Lake Odessa, where they remained until Stuard had finished his high school education, and then the family moved on the former Geo. Neithammer farm in Woodland. Last Saturday evening, May 24, she and her husband came to this village to do some trading and while crossing the main street, she ws hit by an auto sustaining internal injuries and also a fractured skull, which rendered her unconscious until she died, Monday evening at 7:30. She leaves to mourn her untimely departure, her bereaved husband, Mr. Emanuel Kussmaul and her only son Stuard Kussmaul, her aged and ailing mother, Mrs. Magdelena Zeitter and her younger sister, Mrs. Christine Begler, who is caring for the mother, one brother, Gottlib Zeitter, of Germany, one sister, Mrs Mary Rochenbauch of Stuetgart, Germany, and another sister, Mrs. Ashby of Midland, Mich. and a large circle of more distant relatives and friends. The days of her earthly sojourn amount to 50 years and seven days. May she rest in peace and the eternal light shine unto her. Interment in Lake View cemetery. The funeral was held Wednesday, Rev. J. E. Cook of the Congregational church officiating at the house and Rev. Nest, her Lutheran pastor, preaching at the Congregational church. The music was by Mears. Wm. and Leon Gilson, George Kart and Merlin Morgan. The attendance at the church was one of largest ever held at that place.
