It seems the father was working at the beet weighing station and the lad went home about six o'clock to get supper. He took the kerosene can and poured oil on some cobs and coals when the explosion came. So great was the explosion that the oil can was said to be perfectly flattened like a sheet of tin. The boy was so badly burned that nearly every bit of clothing was burned off but his shoes Even his eyelids, lips and nose were nearly gone. In his fright he ran out of doors and attracted the attention of Rev. Orville Shantz, who noticed the boy come out of the house and Peter Fender, a neighbor and the two men rushed to the lad's assistance and smothered the flames and removed him to the parsonage. A hurry-up call was given for Dr. Andrews of Woodland, who arrived in ten minutes. The doctor found the boy badly burned and advised his removal to Pennock hospital where he died the next morning about eight o'clock. It was found that about four-fifths of his flesh was burned very badly. The funeral was held in the U. B. church at Woodbury Saturday at two P. M. Interment in the Lakeside cemetery. The house was also set on fire by the explosion but the flames were soon extinguished by Mr. and Mrs. A. Middaugh, who hearing the explosion, had gone to see what the trouble was. The mother has been gone from the home since the lad was four years old and he has been cared for by his father.
