All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sandy Heintzelman sheintz@iserv.net January 16, 2015, 11:59 am Ionia Daily Sentinel Standard, 26 & 30 Mar 1940 Mrs. Lodema LaDow, who celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday in Ionia, July 10, 1939, at the home of her grandson, Abram Tanner, of Union street, died Tuesday morning at 2:50 o’clock, at the home of her grandson, Dean Higbee, in Dayton, Ohio, where she had resided for the past ten years. She was a resident of Ionia city for 75 years, having come to Ionia in 1855. She was born in New York state and came to Michigan while still a babe in arms. Her girlhood days were spent in Chesaning and it was not until 1855 that she first came to Ionia. She married Jacob LaDow shortly before the outbreak of the Civil war. At the time of the war she was left with two small children while LaDow went off to war. LaDow was a farmer and the couple owned a farm north of town until 1904 when it was sold to Charles Burrows. He was also a carpenter and the family lived in 19 houses within a period of twenty years as each of the houses he built were occupied by railroad employees. They later made their home at 113 West Lytle street. LaDow died there in 1913. The couple had three children, Ettie Tanner, Flora Higbee and Fred LaDow, all of whom are deceased. Surviving are five grandchildren, Vernon Tanner and Abram Tanner, of Ionia; Mrs. W.A.Stacey of Grand Rapids, Dean Higbee of Dayton, Ohio; and Robert Tanner of Midlothian, Ill., and four great-grandchildren, Perry and Charles Tanner of Midlothian, Ill., and Marjorie and Esther Ruth Tanner, of Ionia. Funeral services will be held in Ionia Friday afternoon from the Stone’s funeral home, at 2 o’clock. Interment will be in the family lot in Highland Park cemetery. ------------ Funeral services for Mrs. Lodema LaDow, 99, one of Ionia’s oldest residents, who died Tuesday morning at the home of her grandson, Dean Higbee in Dayton, Ohio, were conducted Friday afternoon from the Stone funeral home in Ionia at 2 o’clock. Rev. C.A. Brady of the Church of Christ officiated and interment was in the family lot in Highland Park cemetery. Music was furnished by Chandler Haight, sr., who sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.” Floral arrangements were in charge of Mrs. John Welch and Miss Loretta Cannon. Bearers were Dean Higbee, Abram Tanner, Robert Tanner, Vernon Tanner, Ward Stacy and J.H. Higbee.
