The man, Walter Lafler, 28, of South Bend, Ind., son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Lafler of Route 4, died after being hospitalized almost continuously since March. Exact cause of death was unknown and an autopsy is being performed to determine it. He has been ill for two years. He was born April 29, 1923, in Ionia and attended Loomis school in South Ionia. He was employed at the Ypsilanti Reed Manufacturing company until he was inducted into the Army December 28, 1942. He received most of his training at Camp McCoy, Wis., and served a total of 21 months with an anti-aircraft coast artillery group in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He received his discharge January 1, 1946, at Camp McCoy and returned home. On November 10, 1946, he married the former Barbara Pickett of Indiana, formerly of Grand Rapids. They made their home in South Bend where he was employed in an auto plant, until he was taken ill. Lafler is a member of the Ionia post, V.F.W. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Myers funeral home. The Rev. R.A. Rook of St. John’s Lutheran church will officiate. Interment will be in Balcom cemetery.
