(Jack) Laird of Ionia passed away at home on May 1, 2009. He was born April 14, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, the first son of William and Magdalene Laird. His parents both immigrated from Scotland and Jack was proud of his Scottish ancestry. During World War II, Jack enlisted in the Army at 17 years of age. He served in Europe and participated in the Normandy Invasion. He was in the Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict but was not deployed. Following WWII, he graduated from Wayne State University in 1953 and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) in Missouri in 1958. After interning at Carson City Hospital, he opened his family medical practice in Saranac in 1959. In 1978 he moved to Sheridan, and continued his practice until retiring early in 2005 due to illness, after serving 46 years in the medical profession. He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Sybil; children Margaret (Bruce) Chadwick of Saranac, Fred (Susan) Laird of Estes Park, Colorado, Nancy (Steve) Hinkle of Ionia, Paul (Michelle) Barber of Freeport, Karen (Rick) Flynn of Livonia, and Stuart (Julie) Satterlee of Saranac; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Jack’s former wife and friend, Emily Laird, also survives. Special thanks to Karen Towersey, his dedicated caregiver. His parents, brother Alan Laird, daughter Amy Laird, and son Tyrone Barber preceded him in death. Jack was a member of the Congregational Church of Sheridan and the Sheridan V.F.W., as well as professional medical associations. Visitation will be held at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Tuesday, May 5, from 2-4 p.m. and 7- 8:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Saranac Community Church, 125 Bridge St., Saranac, on Wednesday, May 6 at 11 a.m. Pastor Philip VanDop of Sheridan Congregational Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sheridan Congregational Church, The Gideons International, or A.T. Still University (KCOM), in care of the funeral home.
