She was under the wonderful care of Dr. Frank Schmid, Hospice of Ionia/Lansing, and her family. Emily was born on Feb. 10, 1921, in Detroit, to Albert and June (Ault) Mackenroth. She graduated from Cooley High School in 1939 and was proud of her service in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE from 1943-46, stationed in Washington D.C. She later graduated from Wayne State University. Emily married John Laird in 1948, and they had four children. The family moved to Saranac in 1959, and Emily was very active in community service with several groups including Saranac School Board and the Library Board, and later worked in the Ionia, Saranac and Clarksville Libraries. She was a member of Church Women United, working many hours at the Christian Service Center. A member of Saranac Community Church, Emily enjoyed Bible studies and service to the Lord. She was an avid reader until unable to see well enough, but spent many happy moments reading to grandchildren on her lap. She enjoyed skiing, traveling, and trips to Colorado to visit family there. She loved her family and friends and all the special times together. Emily is survived by, and will be dearly missed by her children, Margaret (Bruce) Chadwick, Fred (Susan) Laird, Nancy (Steve) Hinkle, nieces Diana (Ron) Schreer and Pam (David) Bowers, grandchildren Steve (Faith) Chadwick, Scot (Mariah) Chadwick, Geof Laird and Ira Laird, Kaycie (Chris) Smith and Jessica (Keith) McClure; great-grandchildren Amy, Aubrey, Judah, Gideon, Naomi, Joseph, Lydia, David, Ronin, Corwin, Matthew, Collin, Charly and Leyna; and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Amy, former husband Jack, her brother and wife Dick and Jean Mackenroth, sister and husband Jane and Larry Jackson, nephews Bill Tyler and Duke Mackenroth, great nephew Brian Bowers and great niece Jacqueline Howe. A Memorial Service for Emily will be held on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, at Saranac Community Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Rebecca Poor and Jeff Kahl officiating. Visitation will be held at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac on Sunday, Dec. 20, from 3-5 p.m. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Saranac Public Library or Hospice of Ionia.
