He fought the cancer to the very end, trying everything possible to put it into remission. He LIVED with cancer for the last 12 months and lived life to the fullest. Never letting a day go by without letting his family know how much he loves them. Louis was born August 29, 1946 in Ionia, Mich., to Hersel and Maxine Lake. Louis was drafted into the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, Louis worked a couple jobs until he found what would be his lasting career. He started work at the Grand Rapids Press and worked up until retirement on November 30, 2007 after 38 ½ years of hard work. Lou married the love of his life, Allison (Nyp), on September 14, 1968. Together they had a son, Chris and a daughter, Melissa (Missy). They grew up in Wayland on a farm with dogs, cats and horses. Surrounding them were amazing neighbors that all grew to be second families to him and amazing friends. Helping each other snowplow, bale hay, fix tractors, cut wood and everything in between. Lou's favorite hobbies were anything to do with John Deere tractors, going camping and traveling with his wife, collecting and playing with Lionel trains and listening to Reba McIntyre. But what made him the happiest were his four grandchildren. Lou is survived by his wife of 45 (1/2) years, Allison; children: Chris (Sarah) Lake and Missy (Raymond) Cummings; grandchildren: Vincent Louis, Lauren Ruth, Mariah Louise and Parker Mitchell; his sister, LaVonne (Bill) Bennett; two brothers: Dan (Roberta) Lake and Herb (Beth) Lake; sister in-law, Ruth (Chuck) Hiar, uncles, aunt, many cousins, nieces and nephews and an overwhelming amount of wonderful friends. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 2-1 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home, 4330 18th Street, Dorr, MI. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, also at the Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home, with Rev. Doug Van Doren officiating.
