He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lake of this place and one of a family of five boys, of whom four were in the service of their country. Harold was born in Hastings, Barry County, Michigan, February 1, 1892, and grew to manhood there. His parents moved to Lake Odessa six years ago but Harold was not at home with them all that time, being on the road as salesman. For a short time he conducted a store at Royal Oak, Michigan and spent only the last six months before his enlistment here with his parents. He was a member of Troop B. 5th Cavalry, as was also his brother Lester who was with him through all their training and through his last illness. Lester was thus able to see that all possible was done for his brother’s aid and comfort. The funeral was held at Grand Rapids, March 6, with burial in that city. The remains were brought from Fort Bliss by the brother Lester, who is now at home on a ten day furlough. Harold was a member of the F. & A. M., Eastern Star and I.O.O.F. lodges, a kindly and loving son, brother and friend. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters, Mrs. W. J. Ackerson and Mrs. W. J. Wheeler, both of Grand Rapids, besides three brothers. Of the four sons in the service of Uncle Sam, Floyd has received his discharge and is at home, Herbert C. is still in France, and Lester will be back at Fort Bliss next week. Thus the service flag in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lake, which so proudly bore four stars of blue, will now even more proudly bear one of gold.
