Lake was driving westbound nearing the curves on M-21 at Johnson Road when slippery conditions caused her to lose control of her vehicle. The car hit a guardrail and slid back into the road, directly in the path of an eastbound vehicle. The oncoming pickup truck impacted Lake's car in the driver's side door, according to the Ionia County Sheriff's Department. Lake was transported to Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in East Grand Rapids following the accident. She later died there. Both Leonard Hanline, 40, and Susan Hanline-Dauer, 43, both of Wayland, escaped major injury. They were wearing their seat belts and air bags were activated. Lake, a member of the swim and softball teams while in high school, was known mainly as "Nickie" and had graduated from Davenport College Dec. 20 with a associates degree. She also was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia." "Obituaries - Nichole Ann Maria Lake - IONIA - Nichole Ann Maria "Nickie" Lake, 20, of Ionia, died Dec. 24, 1995 at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in East Grand Rapids. She was born Jan. 7, 1975 in Belding, the daughter of Foster and Elaine (McCarthy) Lake. She graduated from Ionia high school in 1993. While in high school she was a member of the swim and softball teams. She graduated from Davenport College with an associate’s of applied science degree on Dec. 20, 1995. She worked locally at the K-Mart and Meijer stores and currently was employed at Doctors Med One in Grand Rapids as medical assistant. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. She is survived by her parents, Foster and Elaine "Lynn" Lake, of Ionia; brothers: Stephen Lake, Sr., of Sheridan, and Phil Lake, of Ionia; grandmother Jeanette Howard, of Jackson; godmother Ceil Krycinski, of Ionia; nieces and nephews: Stephen Foster, Jr., Justin, Josie, Charlie, and Stacey Lynn Lake; fiancee Eric Reeves, of Orleans; and several aunts and uncles. The funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia with Fr. Charles Hall presiding. Interment will be in the spring at North Plains Cemetery in Muir. Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Cook Funeral Home in Ionia and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, where there will be a scripture service at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul Memorial Fund."
