Oct. 23, 1978 ELON D. LAKIN PORTLAND - Elon D. Lakin, 78, of 9934 East Grand River, Portland, died Friday at a Lansing hospital. He was born August 5, 1900 in Lansing, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Lakin. He was a registered pharmacist and former salesman for Hazel Tine and Perkins Company in Grand Rapids, retiring in 1961. Mr. Lakin was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a charter and life member of the Portland Country Club and Grand River Conservation club, the Ionia County Hunting and Fishing Club and the Western Michigan Rifle and Pistol club. He was a former charter member and past president of the Ionia Lions club, a former member of the Hiawatha Sportsman club and former member of the Ingham County Druggist Association; charter member and past president of the Danby and Portland Senior Citizens, past master concillor of DeMolay, past master and member of Portland lodge 31 F & AM and a past high priest and life member of Portland chapter 39, RAM. Mr. Lakin was a past thrice illustrious master and life member of Portland Council 23 R & SM and past commander and life member of of Ionia Commandery 11, Knights Templar. He was a Knight of the York Cross of Honor and local chairman of the Dewitt-Clinton, Consistory 32nd degree, Ambassador Saladin Shrine and holder of Merit Award with three diamonds, Mr. Lakin was past president of the Portland Masonic Temple Association and a life member and past patron of Portland lodge 258 Order of the Eastern Star. Services were Monday at 2 pm from the Neller funeral home with pastor Dow Chamberlain of Portland United methodist church officiating. Burial in Portland cemetery. Masonic services were at the graveside. Bearers were Clyde Ellison, Russell Curtis, Robert Moyer, Ray Shaw, Howard Wilcox and Elmer Smith. A memorial fund is established.
