James Luke LaLonge, 78, for the past 34 years a resident of Tremain’s corners, Orange township, died Wednesday evening at his home after an illness of about ten days duration. Mr. LaLonge was one of the best known men of the township having been engaged in operation of a blacksmith shop there for almost all of the years of his residence at the corners. He was of the sturdy, honest type which inspired Longfellow to write his immortal poem “The Village Blacksmith.” He was possessed of the kindly characteristics of the famed smith and was looked up to by all who knew him. Prior to his coming to Orange township, Mr. LaLonge had been a resident of Sebewa township for 16 years and had won the same reputation and earned the same friendships there that he enjoyed in and around Tremain’s corners. He is survived by a son, Elvaus LaLonge and an aged sister, now residing in Canada. There also are a number of other more distant relatives. He was a member of the Ionia lodge of Oddfellows and the lodge members will officiate at the funeral in the capacity of pall bearers. The services will be held Friday at 2:30 P.M. Eastern Standard time, from the home. Burial will be beside his wife in Letts cemetery.
