Lane, 85, died at his home, 132 Cleveland Street, Sunday January 3, at 12:20 a.m. following an illness of ten weeks. Mr. Lane was born June 21, 1851, in Flint, Michigan, the son of Amosiah and Catherine Lane. His mother was born in England. When a year and a half old he moved with his parents to Geneva, Ohio. He was educated in the public schools of Geneva and attended the Seminary at Geneva City. He was a brakeman on the Lake Shore Railroad for several months and then went to braking on the railroad from Memphis to Chattanooga, Tenn. In 1872 he returned to Michigan and has been a resident of Ionia county for 64 years and a resident of Ionia City for 50 years. In 1874 he was married to Ida J. Weaver of Boston township. Mrs. Lane died June 26, 1935. For twelve years Mr. and Mrs. Lane resided on a farm in Boston township and in March 1886 they moved to Ionia. Mr. Lane was an employee of the Pere Marquette shops for eight years. In June 1894 he went to work at the Michigan Reformatory as assistant engineer. He was employed there for 35 years. He was also a member of the fourth ward fire department. During these years he was a very familiar figure to the people of Ionia, making the trip night and morning with his horse and buggy. Each night he made his regular stop at H. A. Rich’s grocery store where he picked up the daily papers for the prison employees. Mr. Lane was a life-long Republican and maintained a keen interest in business and political affairs until his death. With J. B. Chaddock he had charge of campaigns in Barry and Ionia County for state and county officers for many years. He was a great sportsman and hunter in his younger days. He killed his last bear in Clarksville, Michigan about 1878. Hunting wild turkeys and attending turkey shoots afforded him much pleasure. He was a man of high ideals. He never lowered his standards, always a gentleman, always a dependable friend. To his children he was a source of inspiration and help. With his genial smile he helped dispel their every care. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lane. Claude A., who died in 1919, Fred, who died in 1907, Elsie Lane VanVleck, who lives at home and Edith Lane O’Dell of Pontiac.
