"Jack" Lane, 71, of Ionia, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2004. He was born on July 7, 1932 in Boston, MA the son of John Gerard Lane Sr. and Alice Bernadette Leary. Jack graduated from Holy Cross Cathedral High School in Boston, Massachusetts in 1949 and from the University of Massachusetts-Boston Teachers College where he majored in education. Following his graduation from college, he was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy serving on the USS Rankin from 1953-1955. Following his service in the Navy he taught elementary school in Needham, MA. He moved to Grand Rapids in 1955 where he taught in the Grand Rapids School District. He then worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections where he was the Recreation Director at the Handlon Training Unit for 12 years and he also taught at Riverside Correctional Facility for 14 years, teaching adult education and GED training. Jack had a passion for the New England Pro Sports teams; and was a Ted Williams Memorabilia Collector. He cherished his dog, Irish. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kelly Lane; brother, Fr. James Lane; step daughter, Julie Greenhoe. Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Joyce of Ionia; four children, John Gerard "Jack" (Jeanie) Lane III of Atlanta, Georgia, Cheryl (Jeff) Staffen of Greenville, Patrick (Patti) Lane of Byron Center, and Bonnie Dye of Ionia; step daughter, Jana (Phil) Fedon of Ionia; 18 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother, Richard Lane of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; special cousin, Lady Eleanore (John) Aupperlee of Cape Cod, MA. The Irish Wake will be held from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Jack and Joyce's home at 1564 Haynor Road in Ionia with the Rev. David Bogda, Pastor, of St. John Lutheran Church of Ionia officiating. Military Honors will be provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice, Ionia County Memorial Hospital-Home Health Care or to St. John Lutheran Church in memory of Jack Lane.
