It was fifty years ago when Peleg S. Laphan and his wife emigrated from Ohio and settled on the farm two and a half miles northeast of this village. Their first home was a log cabin which they built after clearing away a place in the forest, the present home not being built until years afterward, and upon this place have they toiled all those years, rearing their family of six children, four of whom are living. He was a highly respected citizen and his death which occurred last Saturday, from old age and heart trouble, is deeply mourned. Mr. Laphan was born in Massachusetts on Nov. 30th, 1825 and moved to Ohio, with his parents when a boy. He was here married to Sarah Amanda Hall, afterward moving to Michigan. To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls. Two of the former now being dead, there remains beside the widow, three daughters, Mesdames Ella Purdun, Elnora Darby and Eugenia Tupper and one boy, William E., to mourn his death. The funeral was held in the Congregational church last Sunday, Rev. Skentelbury officiating. Interment was made in Lakeside Cemetery.
