Howard is survived by his sister, Marilyn (Robert) Schwallier, and his nine children; Sharon LaPointe of Williamston, Bruce (Beth) LaPointe of Mt. Howard was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines during World War II. Upon return from service he graduated from Ferris State College in 1947 with a Bachelor's degree in accounting. Howard loved anything to do with numbers, which was handy with his profession in accounting and business management at various state agencies. He retired as business manager of the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia in 1983. His facility with numbers also manifested itself in his love of dominoes and card playing (he actually logged over 50,000 solitaire games in a steno pad). Nothing moved him faster to the kitchen table than the sound of cards shuffling or dominoes being readied for play. He also had a lifelong love of ice cream, starting with his job at the East End Creamery in Grand Rapids, where he learned to scoop and hold five cones at one time. He and his wife, Lee, enjoyed taking the family for Sunday afternoon drives culminating in cones for all, and later in life he enjoyed bed-lunch snacks of ice cream with generous toppings of chocolate syrup. Howard was an avid small game hunter and fisherman who used these recreational skills to good benefit in putting food on the table for nine children. The children in turn learned the specialized skills of removing buckshot from game and dinner plate fish filleting. And then there was his humor! A memorial Mass will be held at SS. Peter and Paul Church, 434 High St., Ionia, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. A lunch reception will follow in the adjacent church hall. Contributions in memory of Howard C.
