He was born on September 18, 1924 in Orange Twp., Michigan the son of John and Laura (Snitgen) Lawless. Robert graduated from Portland High School in 1942 and was a lifelong resident of Portland. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Portland V.F.W. Robert served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific. He retired in June of 1982 from the Department of Corrections as a captain. His family was the focus of his life. Robert is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Doris (Fedewa) Lawless; sister, Ruth Black; brother-in-law Frank Black; and sister-in-law, Revella Lawless. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Alice; daughter, Sandy Hyland of Portland; sons, Larry (Jean) Lawless of Marquette, Ken (Cindy) Lawless of Portland, Tom (Deb) Lawless of N. Yarmouth, Maine, and Steven (Gina) Lawless of Lahaina, Hawaii; grandchildren, Cari (Michael) Scheuller, Dana Hyland, Jason (Julie) Hyland, Michael Lawless, Heather Lawless, Kristi Lawless, Kimberly (Wes) Avery, John Lawless, Matthew Lawless and Stephanie Lawless; great-grandchildren, Mitchel and Caleb Schueller, Dalton, Taylor and Tavin Hyland, and Grace Avery; step- daughters, Connie (Christopher) Martin-Gill of Ferndale, MI and Deborah (Gregory) Martin-Gill of Grand Rapids; step-grandchildren, Elisabeth (Larry) River, Derek (Heather) Campbell, Rebecca Weaver-Gill, and Ethan Gill; and brothers, Richard (Shirley) Lawless and Marvin lawless. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Larry King at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2007 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Schrauben- Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland; with a Scriptural Wake Service being prayed at 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Robert’s name.
