Mrs. Lawless, whose maiden name was Mary J. In 1854 she was married to W. S. McGarah To this union three children were born, George Robert, who died in infancy, Mrs. Sarah Cahill, of Charlotte, and Mrs. Frances E. Barker, of Nashville. In 1882 she was married the second time to Patrick Lawless. The couple lived on his farm at Maple Corners until his death in 1892, after which she moved back to Portland. She had been a member of St. Patrick’s church since 1880, and faithful to the end. She was a kind and loving mother, ever ready to do for the pleasure and comfort of others, fully appreciating the fact that, “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” There are left to mourn her loss two daughters, two brothers, one sister, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
