In the death of George R. Leach, 81, Monday evening, Ionia lost one of its oldest residents and a citizen distinguished by having had a residence in the county continuously for nearly three-quarters of a century. He died in his home at Dildine corners, where he and his wife, companions for 57 years, moved last June after living in Ionia several years. He died suddenly after a day of activity. He came into the house with the coal for the evening and sat down on a chair and was heard to fall to the floor by Mrs. Leach, who was in an adjoining room. She summoned Leo Wrisley, who lives across the road, who came and picked Mr. Leach up from the floor where he had fallen face foremost, with life probably extinct before he reached the floor. While it was known that he was suffering from a heart ailment, the fact that he kept up his activities about the home kept his friends from realizing the seriousness of his trouble. When stricken he and Mrs. Leach were planning to close their home and leave Nov. 1 for Wisconsin to remain a part of the winter with a daughter. They were to accompany Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Vohlers, who are leaving on that date for California, a part of the way. He was born in New York Nov. 21, 1849, and came to Michigan with his parents when a small boy, making the trip from Detroit with oxen. His parents settled in Easton township, where he had lived nearly 75 years of the 81 years of his life, with the exception of a short time spent in Ionia. His was a vigorous life. He began as a farmer in Easton township and later learned the carpenter trade. After his retirement from work he kept busy assisting Mrs. Leach with the heavier work of the home and doing the chores that a home necessarily needs to have done. Early in young manhood he affiliated with the church at Dildine corners, when the church was a unit of the Free Methodist denomination. He retained his membership there, but when he came to Ionia to live he attended regularly and faithfully the Methodist Episcopal church, remaining for the Sunday school session. The burning of the church a few weeks ago cast great sorrow over him and he has watched with zeal every movement on the part of church officers toward replacement of the edifice. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Viola Carpenter, he leaves five children, Mrs. E. L.Vohlers, of Ionia; Mrs. LeGrand Terry, of Easton; Charles and Roy Leach, Detroit; Mrs. W. D. Oelig, New Auburn, Wis., and 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Stebbins funeral home Wednesday at 2:30. Those desiring to view the remains may call at the home of Mrs. Vohlers, 857 West Main Street. It is requested flowers be omitted.
