He had been confined to his bed continuously since last October, but seldom complained of his lot. The end came peacefully. Mr. Lehman was a native of Westphalia township, having been born there June 12, 1846. He was in his 69th year when the summons came. He moved to Portland 39 years ago and engaged in the blacksmithing business, continuing this occupation steadily until about 10 years ago, when his little shop on James street collapsed. After that he worked spasmodically for various local blacksmiths. He was known as a mechanic of exceptional ability. Forty-six years ago deceased was married to Katherine Martin, of Westphalia, who survives. Of nine children born to them seven are living: Mrs. Frank Dehn, Lansing, Mrs. Emmett McCrumb, Eagle; Albert J. Lehman, Port Huron; Mrs. P. J. McCourt, Miss Margaret Lehman and Messrs. Leo C. and Herman P. Lehman, of this place. Twin sons died in infancy. Besides the widow and children, deceased leaves three brothers and four sisters: John Joseph Lehman, a twin, of this place, John Peter Lehman, Marinette, Wis.; Peter Lehman, Milwaukee; Mrs. Jos. Snitgen, Westphalia; Mrs. Eva Wagner, Chicago; Mrs. Agnes Bretching, Grand Rapids; Mrs. Elizabeth Fey, Portland. The funeral was attended from St. Patrick’s church this (Thursday) morning at 9:00, Rev. John A. Koelzer celebrating requiem high mass. Burial took place in the Catholic section of Portland cemetery.
