F. Leland died at his home in the southeastern part of the village Wednesday afternoon, following a long illness from cancer of the throat. He had been unconscious since Sunday, during which time his death was expected at any moment. Mr. Leland, who was 78 years of age last October, was born at Perry, Maine. In 1861 he enlisted as a sergeant in Company F, 6th Maine Infantry, but was discharged a year later on account of disability. In 1865 he was married to Miss Belle Baldwin, at Boston, Mass., the couple coming to Portland 42 years ago. To this union four children were born, all surviving deceased. They are Frank, Charles and Fred Leland, of Medicine Hat, Alta., and Mrs. Maude Danner, of Cleveland, O. The widow also survives. Funeral services will be held at the Congregational church Friday afternoon at 2:00, conducted by Rev. C. I. Taylor, and the remains will be buried in Portland cemetery. Members of the G.A.R. and Ladies’ G.A.R. circle, of which societies Mr. Leland was a member, will attend the last rites in a body.
