He was born in Gellendin, Germany, on January 28, 1858. In 1879 he was married in Germany to Mary Caroline Zanders and they came to America, and directly to Ionia in 1882. He had lived for the past 48 years in the home on Cyrus street where he died. During the first few years he was in Ionia, he was a coachman for William Steele, one of Ionia’s pioneers, and later became a miller. Hs is survived by seven children, Herman Lemke of Ionia township, Mrs. Gus Nimz of Ionia, Frank Lemke of South Haven, Mrs. Edith Nimz of Saginaw, Mrs. Mabel McLaughlin of Holly, Richard Lemke of South Haven, and Mrs. Lena Parker of Ionia. One son, William Lemke, died in 1918 in the World war in France. He also has 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Prayer services will be held from the home on Cyrus street Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 4, at 2 o’clock and funeral services will be from the St. John’s Lutheran church on Jefferson street at 2:30 o’clock with Rev. R.A. Rook of the church officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park.
