March 4, 2003 Excerpts from Grand Rapids Obituary SHERMAN L. LEONARD Died Sunday, March 2, 2003-age 100 at Grand Rapids. Preceded in death by his wife Mabel in 1996 after 66 1/2 years of marriage. Also preceded in death an infant son; granddaughter, Lisa Buttrey and son-in- law, Frank Maier. Survived by three daughters and one son, Joan & Jim Slater of King George, VA., Judith Maier of Juneau, Alaska, Mary & John Buttrey of Holland, MI. John & Nancy Lepard of Grand Haven; 21 grandchildren & 33 great-grandchildren. Memorial service Thursday at 2 PM at Porter Hills Presbyterian Village Chapel & Meeting House,3600 E. Fulton, Grand Rapids followed by visitation. Private interment at Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa. Memorial Contributions to Porter Hills Benevolence Fund or a charity of one's choice. Sherman had owned the Medical Arts Pharmacy and Surgical Supply Company. He served on the Grand Rapids Public School Board for 16 years. He was a past chairman of the Kent Co. Chapter of The American Red Cross, and member of the downtown Rotary Club. Member of the First United Methodist Church and formerly of the Burton Heights United Methodist Church. Sherman & Mabel enjoyed retirement years on their Caledonia Farm.
