Paul Leschke, 74, of 316 East Ellis was found dead on a bed when police officers entered the home at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Officers had been called to the scene after a neighbor saw Leschke’s body through a window. City police and sheriff Gary Newton entered the home with the use of a skeleton key. Leschke had suffered a severe head wound, and trails of blood led throughout the house. Officers and coroner Dale Kauffman, after an extensive investigation, determined that Leschke had fallen sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning, striking his head against either a table or a door casing. The victim had apparently attempted to apply first aid to the wound, officers said. A compress of napkins and paper had been applied to the wound, and had been held in place by a rubber band. Death, according to coroner Kauffman, was caused by severe bleeding through the wound. Officers, after a lengthy investigation, ruled out any theories of foul play in the death. Leschke’s wallet, containing money, had not been disturbed, and there were no signs of any prowling or disturbances in the house. Funeral services for the victim were held Wednesday afternoon at Huffman Funeral Home. Burial was in River Ridge cemetery. Mr. Leschke’s wife died in 1966. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Walter Huber, of New Baltimore, and one brother, Elmer, of Birmingham.
