Lewis. Unexpected Death of an Estimable Ionia Lady. Great sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Gregg Williams, in the sudden death of their daughter Allie, just before noon Saturday. She was an only child, a lovely girl, in whom had centered all the parents’ affection. She was married only a few months ago to Melvin D. Lewis, a worthy young man of business promise, and her life was full of promise. She had been ailing two or three weeks, but was not supposed to be in critical condition up to within an hour or two of her death. The trouble was la grippe with heart complications. There was a large attendance of sympathizing friends at the funeral service for Mrs. Alice Williams-Lewis, at the Williams home, Wednesday, including 25 of the employees of Carten’s store, who attended in a body. The service was by Rev. M. L. Fox, and the singing by Mrs. Fox. There was a large number of floral testimonials, including a large harp of roses from the employees of Carten’s store. The bearers were Fred Cutler, jr., Frank Carten, Robt. Ammon, and Roy Rushmore. Interment was in Highland Park. There were in attendance from out of the city, Mrs. George Lewis, mother, Miss Anna Easterlby, Merton Easterlby and Frank Houghton, relatives of the bereaved husband, all of Lowell; and Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Lake of Gull Lake, Kalamazoo county, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lake and family of Lake Odessa, relatives of deceased. ---- Alice Williams-Lewis, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gregg Williams, died at their home, 406 North Jefferson street at 11:30 o’clock Saturday morning February 18th, after a brief illness of only five days, of heart failure, aged 19 years, 6 months and 7 days. Alice Williams-Lewis was born in Ionia August 12th, 1885, where her whole life has been spent, and her death was a great shock to the large circle of friends who knew her best, and to whom she was endeared by the amicable and loveable traits which go to make up a noble womanhood. Though the summons came to her almost without warning, in the springtime of life, it found her ready, and the memory of her noble life will ever be a benediction to the loving hearts which mourn her absence from their midst. She was married to Melvin D. Lewis, December 22nd, 1904, less than two months ago, and the happy couple were just entering upon a life of happiness which was so suddenly cut off by her untimely demise. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the young husband and parents in their great sorrow. The funeral services were held from the home of her parents Wednesday morning, February 22nd at 10 o’clock. Rev. M. L. Fox of the M. E. church, officiating, who spoke feelingly of the beautiful life that had been transported to the home on high. The floral offerings were profuse, the beautiful casket in which she rested being literally buried beneath them. Among the floral offerings was a large harp of roses from the employees of Thos. A. Carten, and panels of roses and carnations from neighbors and friends. The interment was in Highland Park.
