Accompanying the body from Detroit was the daughter, Mrs. William Benjamin, Mr. Benjamin, a son, John Lewis, of Boyne City, and a nephew, George Green, of Marine City. The death of Mrs. Lewis, former pioneer of Pewamo, took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Benjamin, in Detroit, last Friday, after an illness of over two years. Older residents of Pewamo will remember the deceased, who was the widow of John Lewis, a pioneer resident of that village. If the writer remembers correctly, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis settled in Pewamo shortly after their marriage and made that the family home for a great many years, the husband and father passing to his reward over a quarter of a century ago. Mrs. Lewis continued to make her home in Pewamo until the infirmities of advancing age compelled her to go to Detroit to join her daughter. She was 82 years old at the time of her death. Mrs. Mary Lewis was a kindly gracious soul. Through all the vicissitudes and sorrows of her long life she kept the same evenly smile of a Christian character and met the world unflinching and unafraid. Although opportuned many times to make her home with relatives she continued to reside in the family home up until a very few years before her death. She witnessed the best years of Pewamo’s history and her name is indelibly linked with that community for over fifty years. Besides her daughter and son, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Hauck, Pewamo, and Mrs. Kate Wyckoff, of Grand Rapids. Short funeral services were held at the grave, Rev. Fr. C.A. Ulenbert, Pewamo, in charge. Friends and other relatives from Portland, Fowler and Westphalia followed the funeral cortege from Pewamo to the cemetery.
