He and the engineer of the locomotive upon which he was fireman thought they saw an approaching train as they were going into Traverse City and the engineer reversed his engine and stepped down on the side step, and, finding out it was a phantom he had seen, did not jump. Lewis, however, jumped from the engine and fell and fractured his skull so that he died soon after.
