Feb. 8, 1899 AN OLD SETTLER DIED Hiram Lewis Had Resided Here 57 Years, An Old Soldier. Hiram Lewis died at his home (in Culvertown) in Portland on the 1st inst., aged 77 years January 26th last. Mr. Lewis was a native of New York state, but came to Portland from Ohio 57 years ago. He has always resided here with the exception of about a year, when he was in the service, having enlisted at Portland in the 27th Michigan in 1864. He had not been in good health for years, but had been able to be about up to last Tuesday - the day before he died. On Friday, however, he fell while in the yard, and struck his head and the physicians are of the opinion that the blow produced concussion of the brain. Funeral services were conducted from the United Brethren church on Saturday last, Rev. Millard officiating. A detachment from the Grand Army Post, of which he was a member, attended the services and acted as pall bearers. Additional Comments: 27th Mi. Inf. GAR (Culvertown) in Portland & 1st S.S.
