Feb. 12, 2013 James A. Lewis, 88, of Ionia passed away Feb. 9, at Heartland Health Care Center of Ionia. He was born June 23, 1924 to Hudson and Alberta (Walker) Lewis in Ionia. He was a graduate of Ionia High School Class of “43”. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving in the India-Burma Theater. After returning home from the service he went to work for Michigan Bell Telephone and retired after 35 years of service. Jim loved all sports especially Michigan football games, golf and bowling. He was Past President of the Ionia Bowling Association and secretary of the Wednesday night league. He also was the secretary of the Portland County Club golf League. Jim was a Life Member of the Ionia Elks where he served as Exalted Ruler twice. He was also a Life Member of the Ionia Moose where he served as Governor twice. He was also a life member of the American Legion of Saranac, and the VFW of Sheridan. Jim is survived by his wife Mary (Beckhorn) whom he married on Jan. 8, 1960, daughter Rhonda (Rod) Briggs, Randy and James (Tammy) Lewis of Ionia; granddaughters; Tracy (Bryant) Guthrie of Shepherd, Jessica (Tony Zanders) Lewis and Jennifer Lewis of Ionia; great grandsons; Logan James Guthrie, Aithin and Aizen Zanders; sister, Gertrude McClain of Midland; sister-in-law Anita Reynolds; niece Sara (Bob) Fox of Ionia; and nephew, Don Chance of Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy Lewis, Violet and husband Don Chance; brother Dick and his wife Ruby (Jarman) Lewis and their sons; Leroy, David and Ernie; and grandson: Jeffrey Allen Towner. Visitation is Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home of Ionia. At his request there will be no services. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com.
