Chester B. Lewis, 74, Ionia, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 1996, at Blodgett
Memorial Medical Center, East Grand Rapids.  He was born March 2, 1922, in Alma,
the son of Frederick and Iva Pinkston Lewis.

He was educated in Alma schools.  He entered the United States Air Force in
September 1942 and served until December 1946.  He was mainly in the Pacific
Theater and was rated as a sergeant.  He received many medals, including the
Bronze Star.  

He was married to the former Lena J. Emmons on March 18, 1946, in Ionia.

Chester worked for Morris Construction, six years at Kelvinator and retired from
General Tire in 1985 after 34 years.  His hobbies were fishing and reading.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lena; three sons and daughters-in-law,
Loren and Bonnie Lewis, Eric and Gail Lewis, Curt and Julie Lewis, all of Ionia;
11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law,
Mona and Jerry Mulnix, Phyllis and LeRoy Wallace, all of Ionia; and nieces and
nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lon Lewis; two
brothers, Stanley and Archie Lewis; and two sisters Lelia and Joanne.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Ionia,
with the Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating.  Interment will be in Balcom Cemetery.
 Visitation will be at the Rich Street Chapel of Cook Funeral Home on Friday
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m.  Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes
Association.
